Employment Status of Persons (Age 16+) with Work Disability and Mobility Limitations in Franklin County

In 1990, there were 82,654 persons ages 16+ (or 11. 2% of the 16+ population) with work disabilities in Franklin County. 50,828 persons (6. 9% of the population) were prevented from working by their work disability. Also in 1990, 27,414 persons ages 16+ (3. 7% of the population) had mobility limitations in Franklin County. Persons may have both a work disability and a mobility limitation.
Of persons with a work disability, as the graph above indicates, those prevented from working represent the largest category (61. 5% of total), followed by the employed (25. 3% of total), those not prevented from working but not in the labor force (9. 6%), and the unemployed (3. 6%). 52,952 persons with a work disability were between the ages of 16 and 64 in 1990, representing no significant increase over the 52,054 persons in 1980. As a percentage of the population 16 to 64, persons with work disabilities decreased slightly from 8. 9% in 1980 to 8. 1% in 1990. Persons are identified as having a work disability if they had a health condition that had lasted for 6 or more months and which restricted their choice of jobs or limited them to less than full-time work at a job or business.
The vast majority (87. 8%) of persons with mobility limitations were not in the labor force in 1990, and more than half were 65 years or older. This represented 14,377 persons 65+ with mobility limitations in Franklin County. Persons are identified as having a mobility limitation if they had a health condition that had lasted for 6 or more months and which made it difficult to go outside the home alone (e. g. shopping, visiting doctor's office). A temporary health condition expected to heal normally (e. g. broken bone) is not considered a health conditio
