| Basically in the UK, it is very difficult these days. Most company's IT budgets are under extreme pressure so when they recruit, they tend to look for experience because they need people to hit the ground running rather than having to spend time training people up. Which of course is a nice catch 22 - how do you get experience if you can't get a job. But that accounts for the fact that you won't see a lot of adverts for trainees. You could try your proposed tactic of writing on spec but such limited IT training positions as exist in large organisations tend to go to internal applicants. In any large company you will have lots of people in Customer Services or Sales or whatever who have a fancy to get into IT. Faced with a choice of training them or an outsider, you inevitably go for the known quantity. At least you know whether they a good worker whereas any outside applicant, however good your interview process, is always a gamble. I know this from practical experience as up to 2 years ago I was a Senior Manager in the IT dept for a large financial services company. And in a sense my career proves the point anyway since 30 odd years ago I started with them in Sales. So don't give up but be prepared to consider that you might need to get into a company in less than your ideal role and then work your way to where you want to be. Best of luck anyway. |
