Kuma J. Deboo, Warden - FCI Herlong
I came to the Bureau of Prisons (BOP) after having worked for the Social Security Administration for almost 15 years. I was in graduate school with classmates who were senior BOP staff. These individuals continuously told me about what a great career corrections would be for me. Eventually, they talked me into applying and I was hired as a Case Manager at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in San Diego. I knew little of corrections and had no idea what lie ahead for me. With a leap of faith, I packed up my belongings and moved from DC to San Diego.
After 11 years, five locations, and several thousand miles later, I was selected as the Warden at the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury, Connecticut. I am currently the Warden at one of the BOP’s newest facilities in Herlong, California, making it my seventh assignment.
I have found my path through the BOP to be everything a successful career should be; challenging, rewarding, exciting, gratifying, at times demanding, but always vitally important to the public we serve. Opportunities are there for everyone who is willing to work hard, to focus on the day to day basics of security, effective communication, integrity, public service, and teamwork. The keys to success are effort, positive attitude, and personal character - those same qualities which will ensure success in any field. |
